Paul Newman's Salad Dressing Has Given Away Hundreds of Millions
It started as a Christmas gift. His marriage to Joanne Woodward lasted 50 years.

Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward met in the early 1950s while working on Broadway. They married in Las Vegas in January 1958, and the same year Woodward won the Best Actress Oscar for The Three Faces of Eve.
Steak at home
Asked how he stayed faithful in Hollywood, Newman famously said, "Why go out for hamburger when you have steak at home?" They were married for 50 years until his death in 2008.
A homemade dressing
Every Christmas, Newman and his friend, writer A. E. Hotchner, mixed up batches of homemade salad dressing to give to friends. In 1982 they decided to sell it, with all profits going to charity. Newman's Own has since donated hundreds of millions of dollars.
Camps for sick children
In 1988 Newman founded the Hole in the Wall Gang Camp in Connecticut, a free camp for seriously ill children. It grew into a network of camps around the world.
Newman also loved car racing. In 1979, at age 54, he finished second at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
